It’s been rumored for a long time, but now, it looks like it’s official as The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Lucasfilm & Disney have entered early negotiations with 3x Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Daldry to helm an upcoming Star Wars spin-off movie and it’s the one we’ve been screaming for.

The project remains in it’s infant stages, with no script yet, but THR adds that if/when Daldry’s deal closes, he would be in charge of developing and writing the script alongside Lucasfilm’s team of scribes.

As for whether 2x Golden Globe-nominee Ewan McGregor will reprise his role is yet-to-be determined (make it so Daldry) as it’s not clear where the film will take place in the Star Wars continuity but surely the only two viable options are during the Clone Wars or Rebels time-frame? Both of which would be fine for his return and the man himself has stated his interest in returning to the role.

At the moment it’s unclear as to whether this will be the stand-alone film to follow Star Wars: Episode IX. As well as the Han Solo film, there are also films based on Boba Fett and Yoda that are in various stages of development (hold your breath, you should not) over at the House of Mouse and either property could also serve as the studio’s 2020 Star Wars offering if Obi-Wan isn’t ready to roll.

So, what do you guys think? Do you want an Obi-Wan film? When should it be set? Is it an Obi-Wan film without Ewan McGregor?
