It’s Geeksmas day 9 and I’m gonna finally share the casting news that I was gonna share two days ago!
Jack Dylan Grazer, who most people will know as Eddie in the critically acclaimed horror film IT, has joined the cast of the upcoming superhero film Shazam!, according to Deadline.
He joins Zachary Levi, who will play “world’s mightiest mortal” and Asher Angel, who will play Billy Batson. Grazer is expected to play Freddy Freeman, Batson’s best friend and the only person who knows the truth about Shazam. Of course, DC fans may be aware that Freeman eventually suits up as a hero himself, taking on the mantle of Captain Marvel Jr. in the comics, though I doubt they’ll use that name if he does suit up in the future.
Originally created in back in 1939 by artist C. C. Beck and writer Bill Parker, Shazam first appeared in Fawcett Comics’ Whiz Comics #2. By saying the world “Shazam,” teenager Billy Batson was transformed into the “world’s mightiest mortal” and given extraordinary abilities by ancient gods.
David F. Sandberg is attached to direct and he recently confirmed that the target release date for the film is April 2019. Known most recently for his work on Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director will step behind the camera with Peter Safran producing. Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke wrote the script for Shazam!, which is scheduled to shoot in Vancouver next year.
Dwayne Johnson will not appear as the villain Black Adam in the film and is developing a solo film for the anti-hero as a separate project. Without Black Adam, the most well-known villain for the hero, there aren’t many villains left for Shazam to tussle with. One potential replacement villain could be Doctor Sivana, who made his debut with the hero in Whiz Comics #2 in 1940. It is heavily rumoured that Mark Strong is set to sign on for this role.
As well as starring in IT, which was the highest-grossing horror film ever, with $694 million worldwide, Jack Dylan Grazer has also appeared in the CBS series Me, Myself & I and will next be seen in the drama Beautiful Boy with Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet.
Of course it remains to be seen how this and the dozen other DC projects that are planned are affected by the recently announced changes at DCEU headquarters. With rumours of many people being shifted from their positions and ushering in some fresh blood. The hope being that it will breathe new life into their franchise. Perhaps they should stop meddling with the films and maybe take some time to build their universe a bit? Just a couple of thoughts.
What are your thoughts on Shazam? Is it a character that you’re excited to see on-screen? Do you think the movie will even be made? Let us know what you think!
