Geeksmas day 19 and it’s some strange news regarding the Spider-Man sequel.
Peter Parker’s love interest in Spider-Man: Homecoming was Liz Allen/Toomes, the daughter of The Vulture. Moving into the sequel, it was assumed by most that role would be given to Michelle (a.k.a. MJ “to her friends”) but a recent number of audition videos pointed to Gwen Stacy showing up in the wall-crawler’s world. However, Marvel Studios will seemingly be taking the character in a very unexpected direction.
A little under a week ago, a video leaked online which apparently was an audition tape and it seems Marvel are setting up their Gwen Stacy to be a foreign exchange student. Given the nature of how Marvel deal with their casting announcements, I didn’t put much stock in it. However another video has surfaced, reported by Omega Underground, – which features European actress Iris Haller – so it appears there may be something to it.
It’s also worth noting that it’s also the same dialog from the first tape suggesting that this is role might be going out to specifically European newcomers. Though I’d still take this with a grain of salt, as neither of these actresses seemingly have credits but an open casting-call would not be the most outrageous thing ever.
It would make sense for Peter to find himself pining after the new girl in school and this change is actually pretty minor in the grand scheme of things. It also would follow the trend of Marvel changing up characters and their origins in this universe.
How would you guys feel about Gwen being from overseas in the sequel? Is this a deal breaker for you? Is this just fake news? Would you prefer to see Mary Jane Watson? Let us know your thoughts.
