After months of little news and plenty of rumours it looks like Birds of Prey will indeed be Warner Bros.’ first R-rated DC movie.

For those who are unfamiliar with the name, Birds of Prey was the name of several comic book series, miniseries, and special editions published by DC Comics, first appearing in Black Canary/Oracle: Birds of Prey (1995). The book’s premise originated as a partnership between Black Canary and Barbara Gordon, who had adopted the codename Oracle at the time, but has gone on to feature a large roster including Huntress, Jade Canary, Gypsy, Hawkgirl, Power Girl, Katana, Catwoman, Poison Ivy and, of course , Harley Quinn. Interestingly many of these have featured in the CW-verse but have been taken off the various shows at different points, could WB be pulling strings again?

Margot Robbie recently revealed that she originally pitched the idea of an “R-rated girl gang film” to the studio, and while speaking to Flickering Myth about her new movie Terminal, the Academy Award-nominated actress confirmed that the Suicide Squad spinoff would indeed carry the more adult-oriented certificate.

Robbie also promised that BoP would be very “different” to the other planned movies that are set to feature Harley Quinn and that it will have a “much smaller budget.”

Robbie also confirmed that the Cathy Yan-directed project is gearing up for a January 2019 shoot date, which was first reported by the guys over at Omega Underground.

So what of those other Harley Quinn-off projects that are supposedly in the works? While it sounds like they are still in development, but at various different stages, Robbie has previously claimed that she has very little to do with them and has been focusing mostly on working towards Birds of Prey with screenwriter Christina Hodson.

So, what do you guys think about the prospect of an R-rated Birds of Prey movie? Is this a project that excites you? Does it need an R rating? Let us know.
