It is probably already apparent.. but if not, then my primary source of films comes courtesy of Netflix. So.. what wonders are bestowed upon me today..

Actually.. not quite all of the film was today – just over half was watched alongside @dstobbie after recording Episode 6 of the Fair City Podcast a couple of weeks back.

The Star Trek remake from a few years ago is one of only 100 or so DVD’s that I still own. I say a few years ago… it was 2009.. jeez time moves fast.

One of the things that was 100% nailed was the casting. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho and the late Anton Yelchin were all near perfect re-castings of the original crew. I enjoyed the first two films immensely so was looking forward to this.

Plot wise it is pretty much what you expect from any trek show/film. A space faring film spanning lots of galaxies in an attempt to thwart a big bad (played this time by Idris Elba.) The CGI was fantastic throughout and everyone gets a chance to shine in their roles.

Essential viewing for Trekkies and thoroughly recommended for sci-fi fans everywhere you should give this one a watch.

Box office wise this was the weakest of the three newer films at $158 Million domestic and $343 Million worldwide – hardly a disappointment, however we all know the suits are keen on increasing returns in franchises. The star power of the cast (alongside their increased wage demands I guess) may result in this being the last of the current re-do’s which is a shame.
