The film is due to feature some DC comics heavy hitters, including Black Canary, Huntress, Renee Montoya and a young Cassandra Cain, as well as Margot Robbie returning as Harley Quinn.

Originally created by Doug Moench and Tom Mandrake, Black Mask made his first appearance back in Batman issue #386 which was released in August 1985.

Black Mask is known for being a brutally sadistic kingpin in Gotham City’s criminal underworld who has a fixation with masks.

In the comics, Black Mask is the alias of Roman Sionis, who murdered his wealthy, status-obsessed parents to take control of the family corporation but then lost everything due to being poorly suited to being a businessman. Seeking revenge on the people he blamed for his own failures — particularly Bruce Wayne and Wayne Enterprises — he returns, hidden behind an ebony black mask, at the head of a gang called the False Face Society. Some different versions of his origin have the mask fused to his face but it’s not clear if this will be the case for the upcoming film.

As well as starring, Robbie will also produce “Birds of Prey” alongside Kroll & Co Entertainment’s Sue Kroll and Clubhouse Pictures’ Bryan Unkeless  The film is based on a run of comics of the same name, centered around a revolving group of female heroes, anti-heroes and several villains.

Cathy Yan is set to direct. Yan is probably best known for writing and directing her feature debut “Dead Pigs,” which took home the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting at Sundance earlier this year. Yan is set to be the third female filmmaker to join the DC universe with this film, while also being the first Asian woman to direct a DC film.

Christina Hodson was brought in to write the spinoff for Warner Bros. and DC Films and is also writing “Batgirl” for DC.
