RPG-a-Day 2018 Day 13: Describe how your play has evolved.

I think I’m a pretty well rounded roleplayer these days, I like to build characters with flaws, personality, an interesting background. I like to make the wrong decision because I know it’s what the character would do in that situation, I like to put on voices, accents, mannerisms that make the character seem more real and fleshed out. I like to act dumb about what’s happening even though I’ve worked out what’s going to happen or I clearly know what monster is attacking us and the best way to kill it. These are all things 11 year old me would never even have thought of being a part of gaming. I loved playing Warhammer Quest back in the day, that game holds a place in my heart as the game I cut my teeth on and was one of the first things I was truly good at. It was however not really a roleplaying game and so all the things I mentioned earlier were not factors when I played.

From those early days, I’ve had the honour to be able to play roleplaying games with some amazing players, some of the cleverest, more creative people I’ve ever met and each one has help me become a better player just by playing with me and showing me different approaches and styles of roleplaying. Getting to play different systems with less clunky rules that encouraged roleplaying and characterisation were eye-opening to me. As I got older and matured, what I wanted from gaming matured from hack and slash dungeon delves to more character focused stories. It also became more of a social thing, we’d play longer and more often, have breaks for meals, go to the pub afterwards and hang out. Now I provide advice for friends who GM on storyarcs and how to approach running games and the pitfalls, and to players to help get more out of games. I like to think I’ve become the veteran I used to sit and listen to and aspire to be, sitting telling tales of high adventure and daring do, but I doubt I’m there quite yet. Maybe some day…

Tomorrow I’ll be looking at a failure that turned out to be amazing…
