RPG-a-Day 2018
RPG-a-Day 2018 Day 17: Describe the best compliment you’ve had with gaming…

I’ve had a few nice things said to me while I’ve been gaming. I’ve been told that I play the most adorable Barbarian which wasn’t really what I was aiming for at the time, but I’ll take it. When someone who had only ever seen me playing non-talker characters witnessed me playing my charismatic corperate asshole in full flow they told me it was amazing. I also won a best player award for playing a level 0 game of D&D at Gaelcon many years ago which was a greaat honour becuase I had a blast playing in the game and it was nice to know the GM enjoyed it too.

The biggest compliment I’ve had though, wasn’t directly a compliment but rather an invite to join a game. Craig Oxbrow’s now infamous Buffy RPG game, The Watch House, had lost players over the summer and was looking to bring in some new blood, and at the Fresher’s Week session they ran what was essentially an “audition” session where the regular players were joined by some new blood playing NPCs. I knew one of the players already and had really wanted to try out the game so was excited just to be playing a different system. At the end of the session, which was a lot of fun in itself, me and one of the other players were “subtley” told they’d see us next week for another session. I went on to play in that game for a number of years, had a load of fun and made some good friends, and it was an honour to be judged good enough to join a bunch of top class roleplayers.

Weekend three of this year’s RPG-a-Day is all about art and music and tomorrow I’ll looking at what art inspires my game…

Until then let me know the best compliment you’ve received when gaming in the comments below. You can find all the previous RPG-a-Day articles here, you can follow me @bargtheogre on Twitter, or check out the Inside the Ogre’s Cavern podcast at @itocpodcast
