RPG-a-Day 2018 Day 21: Which dice mechanic appeals to you?
As mentioned yesterday, I’m a big fan of the Advantage/Disadvantage mechanic from D&D 5e, where for any d20 roll like an attack roll or skill check you roll two d20s and take the higher if you have advantage or the lower if you have disadvantage. It removes a lot of the old floating modifiers that could bog down combat when you have to calculate the modifier you have to add to the roll. It ups the the chances for natural 20s or natural 1s which is always fun in a game. It’s also so much less clunky than other dice mechanics, while it’s fun seeing how high “exploding” dice can go, it can make one action go on forever, with advantage/disadvantage you roll a second dice at the same time and take the appropriate score and off you go.
We move away from dice mechanics on day 22 as I look at which non-dice system appeals to me.
